Bush endorses McCain, Republicans cringe

HOUSTON — With the Republican primary race all but sealed, party leaders expect President George W. Bush to endorse Arizona Sen. John McCain at a press conference in Houston Monday.

After hearing word of the endorsement Sunday via Fox News, McCain pleadingly called the president to say, “Please don’t.”

Republican leaders seemed shocked by McCain’s plea, as they hoped the endorsement would undercut staunch conservatives who are reluctant to support the dangly joweled senator known for randomly jumping on the moderate train for, as he calls it, “the helluvit.”

McCain, however, insisted the president’s stamp of approval to be “bad juju,” either referring to bad luck or anti-Semitism.

“With his approval ratings and knack for looking like an idiot, I’m certain his endorsement would mean my ultimate downfall,” McCain said. “I mean, seriously, I’d be doomed.”
