Tami J. Pohnn, Staff Writer
Tami J. Pohnn discovered newspaper journalism later in life, after successfully dominating her first career as a decathlon champion and two-time Olympic gold medal winner. Born on the mean streets of Detroit, Tami aspired for more than her meager backgrounds and she found that inspiration in two things: books and the decathlon.
After attending Georgetown University – where she earned a double major with honors in English Literature and Political Science – Tami took her talents on the track and field to the world as the youngest member of the United States Olympic squad in Atlanta in 1996.
She won her first gold medal there, then added to the collection in Sydney with another gold. But after ten years of touring the world, she succumbed to the Kronos and was dropped from the team in Athens.
Disappointed, Tami looked elsewhere and found her true calling when she chronicled her adventures in a best-selling memoir “A Crazy Ho From Detroit Takes On the World.” It won the Pulitzer Prize in 2005, and Tami decided to pursue newspaper journalism full-time.
Today she is an award-winning reporter for USA Tomorrow who covers life from its many angles – the politicians, the celebrities and the dead or soon-to-be-dead. Tami lives in Washington D.C. with her husband John Stewart and their two dogs, Indiana Jones and Han Solo.
